On New Year's Eve, Austrians not only reach for sparkling wine, but also for high-proof spirits. However, overall volumes are declining this year - especially in one segment. Sales are only remaining reasonably stable due to higher prices.
"The rise in prices is causing many consumers to weigh up their spending more carefully," says Andreea Munteanu from the spirits group Pernod Ricard, which owns brands such as Jameson, Lillet and Ramazzotti. Prices have also risen due to higher costs, which at least makes sales look stable. There were price increases on the raw materials side in particular, such as glass.
