Savings club: A tradition threatened with extinction

The savings club in the local pub around the corner has been around since the 19th century. Today, the days of this nostalgic form of saving are almost numbered. At the Kornfehl bakery in Marz in Burgenland, however, this tradition is still upheld - and not just on the upcoming World Savings Day.

Back in the heyday of World Savings Day, people used to sing the praises of thriftiness and not shout "Anna, we've got the credit!". Entire school classes went to the bank to empty their piggy banks. They were greeted by the legendary "Sparefroh" and given small gifts.
