How universities can become forges for start-ups

For many start-ups, the highs were followed by a deep fall. What's more, there are currently few new companies due to a lack of funding. In an interview with Krone, former manager and business angel Werner Wutscher sees universities as a major lever: "Austria needs to make more use of its potential."

Around 3.2 percent of gross domestic product is spent on research and development in Austria. A top position in Europe, only Sweden and Belgium spend more. However, the output is not optimal, says Werner Wutscher, former Rewe board member and investor: "The start-up ecosystem in Austria is well developed, but in view of our high expenditure on research and development, even more innovative start-ups should come from Austria."
