Why the security advisor position is vacant
The new Crisis Security Act has been in force since January 1, 2024 - among other things, it created a position for a dedicated security advisor for the government. But even after more than half a year, the post is still vacant ...
According to the federal law, a separate crisis security advisor and a deputy were to be appointed "to provide overall strategic advice to the federal government on issues of crisis prevention, crisis management, comprehensive national defense, national security and state resilience". Not an insignificant task, considering the current war situation in Europe and the Middle East - but there is still no one to fulfill the above-mentioned tasks, as the post is still vacant.
This advisor is responsible for managing the advisory body in the event of a crisis and must regularly review the security situation in Austria and submit reports. The Federal Crisis Security Act (B-KSG) has been in force since the beginning of the year, the application deadline for the vacancy ended on January 8th, so why is there still no government advisor?
