Why citizens have no chance against the waste plant
"Suddenly the excavators have rolled in": Those who had not yet heard about it via the local "grapevine" felt as if they had been overrun when they looked out of their windows: Before the eyes of the residents of Blumau-Neurißhof (Lower Austria), the construction of a waste sorting plant was starting in the neighboring municipality of Sollenau.
Apparently it is not only the district border that separates the market town of Sollenau (Wiener Neustadt) from Blumau-Neurißhof (Baden). After all, there is unlikely to have been any municipal discussion about the project to build a huge waste sorting plant beforehand. "However, the fact that the construction negotiations had already taken place was only discovered through a public announcement on the Lower Austrian provincial government's website," René Klimes, mayor of Blumau-Neurißhof, had to tell his worried and surprised citizens.
However, the "waste plant scare" is still breathing down the residents' necks, as it was only in 2019 that fierce public protests there led to a recycling plant for construction waste being stopped. At that time, the objections were successful.
