The smarter, the better—that’s the motto of most tech enthusiasts. For many, a smart doorbell with image transmission and video surveillance is simply a must-have. The legal situation, however, isn’t quite that simple or clear-cut: We asked what the legal implications are regarding surveillance by neighbors.

Most people in this country already know that with surveillance cameras, you have to be careful about how and what they actually record—after all, you’re only allowed to film your own property or your own front door. But the fact that you also have to be careful with doorbells equipped with surveillance cameras hasn’t quite sunk in for many people yet.
