European Championship qualification
U17 team concedes late equalizer in overtime
Austria's U17 team was punished late on by Norway on Saturday and has to tremble for its European Championship ticket for Cyprus.
"The disappointment is huge." For coach Martin Scherb, his ÖFB Under-17s' 2:2 draw against Norway felt like a defeat in the end. Understandably so. Three minutes before the end, Austria was on course for the European Championship ...
... before the guests from the far north played the party pooper in the qualifying tournament in Wiener Neustadt when they were outnumbered and Norbye (92) headed the equalizer 2:2. "We weren't cool enough in the decisive moments," said Scherb, whose team not only had to digest a late shock, but also an early one.
"Were bitterly punished"
Nilsen-Modebe had put Norway ahead in the first minute before Ivanschitz equalized. After Svenningsen (56) was sent off with a red card, Moizi made it 2:1 in the meantime. "We only conceded two chances and were bitterly punished for it," sighed Scherb. "Unfortunately, we missed our big chance to go to the European Championship in Cyprus."
But nothing more. On Wednesday, however, they must deliver against Spain, who celebrated a 5:0 victory over Slovenia. Scherb: "Hope dies last."
