It is about hatred, extremism, anti-Semitism, ostensibly at the time of the Council of Constance in 1414: the Catholics had three popes, Jan Hus tried to reform. The extreme tension between the religions overshadows a family story that ends in catastrophe in the opera "La Juive (The Jewess)" by Fromental Halévy: Rachel, the cardinal's secret daughter, is burned to death.
