20,000 people die on Europe's roads every year, which is why the EU Commission wants to increase road safety for pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists in particular. A noble goal, but parts of the proposals are difficult to understand. The plans are primarily aimed at novice drivers and senior citizens. There has already been massive uproar and resistance in the run-up to the vote, with completely absurd points such as mandatory medical checks for senior citizens alone or a ban on SUVs for young people up to the age of 21 being defeated - as reported by Krone. 100 amendments have now been submitted, but the EU centralization of driver's license guidelines is far from off the table.
