Two-time Olympic champion Michelle Gisin announced her retirement from the Alpine Ski World Cup on Tuesday.

The 32-year-old suffered multiple injuries in a crash during downhill training in St. Moritz last December and had to abandon her hopes of a comeback. The highlights of the Obwalden native’s career were her Olympic victories in the now-defunct combined event in 2018 in Pyeongchang and 2022 in Beijing.

Four years ago in Beijing, she added an Olympic bronze medal in the super-G. In the now-defunct combined event, Gisin also won her two World Championship medals: silver in 2017 and bronze in 2021.

In the World Cup, she stood atop the podium once: in 2020, she won the slalom in Semmering—the very place where she had made her World Cup debut eight years earlier. In total, Gisin achieved 21 World Cup podium finishes across all five disciplines.

“I would have needed at least one more year”
The crash last December, in which she injured her knee, thigh, wrist, shoulder, and cervical spine, has now brought her career to an end.

A comeback this season, which would have included the World Championships on home soil in Crans-Montana, would not have been possible. “I had a combination of very serious injuries. And I think I would have needed at least another year—maybe even two—to be able to race again,” said Gisin.
