Still suffering today?
Chernobyl’s health consequences
It has been a long time since the Chernobyl reactor accident on April 26, 1986, but the health consequences are still the subject of investigations today. More than 30 deaths are directly linked to the disaster, and the number of deaths due to long-term effects varies greatly. In any case, there is still an exclusion zone around the power plant today.
It was a nuclear disaster with unforeseen consequences for hundreds of thousands of people that broke out in the fourth unit of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in what is now Ukraine on April 26, 1986. It was the first accident to reach the highest level on the International Nuclear Incident Scale (INES), namely level seven. The explosion resulted in a graphite fire - releasing radioactive substances to great heights of up to 10,000 meters.
