Risky "gold rush"
When AI manipulates our decisions in the future
Until now, advertising has been regarded as the main driver of the internet economy. However, the courting of attention online could soon come to an end and instead a form of economy could come to the fore in which our decisions are sold thanks to artificial intelligence - before we have even made them. Experts are already warning of a dangerous "gold rush".
Researchers are sounding the alarm: in the near future, AI assistants could predict our decision-making at an early stage and sell these evolving "intentions" in real time to companies that can meet the demand - even before we have made a decision. They speak of a "lucrative but unsettling new market for digital intent signals" where buying decisions are traded as well as voting decisions. Tech giants such as OpenAI and Nvidia are already working towards this.
