Why Musk is denied access to secrets
He is the richest man in the world, but there is one thing Elon Musk has not been able to buy - at least not yet: access to the biggest government secrets of his space company SpaceX. For good reasons.
Hundreds of thousands of private defense contractors in the US have access to government secrets as part of their work. Their security clearances are the same as those of government employees and generally include three levels: confidential, secret and top secret.
More than 400 employees of SpaceX, which has worked with national security agencies since Musk founded it in 2002, also have access to so-called sensitive information - what the government calls secrets about how information is gathered and where it comes from.
A smaller number of employees of the space company even have access to secrets that the government classifies as even more sensitive and calls "Special Access Programs". Only one person apparently does not yet know what secrets SpaceX is sending into space for the US military and intelligence agencies: Elon Musk.
