Why ghosts wear clothes and are not naked

A white sheet with two slits for the eyes is undoubtedly one of the classic Halloween costumes and generally represents what we imagine a ghost to be: a creature in a long, flowing robe. Only one thing rarely or never occurs to us: that ghosts could be naked. But why is that?

What comes to mind when you think of a ghost? A ghastly, moldy shroud? A malevolent pile of supernatural armor? Or a creepy gentleman in a stiff Victorian suit?
