Dialect as a bad habit: Will Styrian soon die out?

Children are expected to "speak beautifully", and in the cities there is an increasing "language mix": dialect is often seen as a learning obstacle, especially at school. Some parents therefore do not want to pass on the dialect to their children. Are dialect speakers becoming a minority? And: How good is your Styrian? Take the test!

A "Quetschn" is an accordion, "dahoam" is at home, and if someone has a "Huscher", it is a roof defect. What is "eh kloa" for many Styrians becomes a foreign language for many others in the Grüne Mark. However: "There is no Styrian dialect in this sense anyway," says linguist Arne Ziegler, laying the facts on the table.
