An ecological disaster has been unfolding in the Mediterranean since the summer. The mussels, also known as cozze, which are popular with locals and tourists alike, are dying en masse, especially in Italy, and are ruining thousands of families. The causes are hair-raising, and scientists are looking for an alternative super mussel to save what can still be saved.
In the southern Italian region of Apulia, there is currently fire under the roof: 9000 tons of mussels found their way into the garbage a few days ago, the damage there alone amounts to eight million euros. Local media are reporting that around 500 farming families are facing financial hardship. There is talk of 90 percent of the harvest being unusable. Also for the coming season.
