The bodies of the two buried workers were not recovered until the night after the accident. The dead were apparently young asylum seekers from Syria. The badly damaged historic old town building is to be demolished. How the city is now helping the evacuated residents of the neighboring buildings.

Shortly after midnight, it became a sad certainty: around 15 hours after two workers were buried during renovation work on Tuesday, the emergency services in Schärding came across two motionless bodies under the rubble. The emergency doctor was only able to determine that the two 23-year-old Syrians were dead.
