Is it okay to simply throw away rejected books?

The cabaret artist, author and expert on human nature Stefan Vögel answers questions that others don't even dare to ask. This time it's about unread books. What to do with all that printed paper? Into the fire, the waste paper container or the open bookcase? 

There are books in my bookcase that I am sure I will never read and never give away. How did I get them? They were either given to me as a present or I thought they were worth reading at an earlier point in my life - but in the meantime they have lost their value for me, and at the same time I don't want anyone else to read them. So what to do with all that printed paper?
