“Operation Anthropoid”
Heydrich: Nazi assassination attempt straight out of a Hollywood thriller
It was the only successful assassination attempt on a leading Nazi official: the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich on May 27, 1942, in Prague. Courageous agents, an unscrupulous Nazi butcher, betrayal from within their own ranks, a showdown in a church—the story of “Operation Anthropoid” sounds like something straight out of a Hollywood movie. The “Krone” went in search of clues in the Czech capital.
May 27, 1942, shortly after 9:30 in the morning. The location for the attack is ideally chosen: a hairpin curve in the Liben district. The Mercedes-Benz Cabriolet Type 320, heading toward Prague Castle with the high-ranking Nazi official on board, has to brake hard to turn right. For the exiled soldiers Jozef Gabcik and Jan Kubis, who are waiting near the local tram stop, this is the signal to strike.
