They don't need much space, can cross any obstacle - including traffic jams - and also save time - there is talk of cable cars as a public transport supplement in urban areas. Even though concrete plans for a gondola system fell through years ago, the cable car over Linz is becoming a reality, according to Klaus Luger, head of the city's Social Democratic Party. How so?

We associate cable cars with skiing vacations and snow-covered slopes. As soon as a gondola system is even considered in an urban area, there is a huge outcry. Yet many cities around the world use cable cars - mainly in South America, but also in Ankara, Hong Kong and Dubai.
