In Austria, angry farmers are in government
Why farmers' protests in Austria are a gift in the truest sense of the word. Unless the ÖVP flees the government ...
It is not a regional phenomenon, but a global historical one: farmers are coming under economic pressure, taking to the streets and forming a political force that is second to none. This has recently happened in France, the Netherlands and, more recently, in Germany. There, the protest against the climate change-related increase in the price of diesel and the abolition of some privileges also showed its ugly face: the aggressive blockade of a ferry port was intended to hit Environment Minister Robert Habeck on his return from his private Christmas vacation, but caught the demonstrators themselves.
Almost all parties condemned the action, which crossed a politician's privacy red line. The German protests continue unabated. The traffic light coalition in Berlin has now found its loudest opponents.
And Austria?
