Newly discovered: Carinthia’s largest castle

2.7 hectares of land enclosed the walls of Ortenburg Castle in Baldramsdorf, which also had the most towers of all 400 castles in the country. It is therefore now clear that the largest castle in Carinthia was that of the Counts of Ortenburg.

There were once more than 400 castles in Carinthia, some are well preserved like Hochosterwitz, while only the remains of walls can still be seen in others. And there are still new things to discover, as historian Markus Wenninger proves when he examines the ancestral castle of the Counts of Ortenburg, whose county stretched between Möllbrücke and Villach and also included the Gottschee southeast of Ljubljana.
