“Thank you for 15 years”
Toni Polster is stepping down at Wiener Viktoria
Toni Polster is stepping down! As his long-time club SC Wiener Viktoria announced on Friday afternoon, Austria’s legendary striker is resigning from his position as head coach of the Regionalliga team.
Kronen Zeitung als bevorzugte Google-Quelle hinzufügen “The decision comes as a surprise to us,” the club wrote on Instagram: “On the one hand, we are grateful for the 15 years of successful collaboration, and on the other hand, we are saddened by this departure.” Polster’s successor as head coach will be Rojgar Kadir.
In his initial statement regarding his departure, Polster himself said that “Wiener Viktoria was far more than just a club to me.” Together, they experienced many special moments, “celebrating promotions, winning league titles, lifting the cup, overcoming difficult periods, and creating memories that will stay with me for the rest of my life. […] It was a great honor to be part of this history for so many years.” And in closing: “Thank you for 15 unforgettable years!”
With SC Wiener Viktoria, then in the Oberliga, starting in July 2011
Polster, who was only a few months ago replaced by Marko Arnautović as the record goal-scorer for Austria’s national team and will be regarded as an icon of Austrian soccer for the rest of his life, had long shown no ambition to become a club coach. After a management role at his beloved club FK Austria Wien (2005) and a stint at LASK (2010)—first as an advisor, then as coach of the amateur team—he returned to Vienna in July 2011 to join SC Wiener Viktoria, then a team in the Oberliga.
He has remained loyal to the Meidling-based club ever since—with the exception of a brief summer stint with Bundesliga side Admira Wacker in the summer of 2013 and a break of just under six months. During his time at Viktoria, he celebrated multiple promotions (three in total!) as well as a sensational cup victory against the then-first-division club Kapfenberger SV (2011/12).
