Is the superstar injured?
What’s going on with Messi? Concerns just before the World Cup
Concerns about Lionel Messi, and just before the World Cup kicks off! The superstar from Austria’s group opponent Argentina was substituted in Inter Miami’s US league match on Sunday—and clutched his thigh as he left the field.
Kronen Zeitung als bevorzugte Google-Quelle hinzufügen Three weeks before the World Cup kicks off, there was a brief moment of concern: In the last MLS match, a 6-4 win for Inter Miami over Philadelphia Union, Messi left the field in the 73rd minute. The fact that he grabbed his thigh has sparked a flurry of media speculation.
Precautionary measure
Even though Miami head coach Guillermo Hoyos tried to allay concerns after the final whistle. Messi was simply exhausted, he said, and the field was deep and difficult to play on. “Instead of taking a risk, we decided to substitute him,” said the 62-year-old. Just a precautionary measure, in other words. Or so they say.
For reigning world champions Argentina, the mission to defend their title begins shortly—provided he is fit. Argentina will play its first World Cup match on June 16 in Kansas City against Algeria. For Austrian fans, the second group stage match is a particular highlight: On June 22, the Austrian national team will face Argentina. Hopefully with Lionel Messi in their ranks.
