Dramatic scenes unfolded on Friday morning in the Tyrolean Ötztal. A local ice climber (41) fell during a tour and was seriously injured. The accident was particularly unlucky.

According to the police, the 41-year-old Austrian was climbing the "Pfifikus" route uphill along a fixed rope in the "Burgsteiner" icefall in the municipality of Längenfeld at around 10.30 am on Friday. The man had almost completed his tour when the accident happened.

Backstop became ineffective
A few meters below the finish, the ice climber fell for unknown reasons. He was particularly unlucky: the pulley with the rope clamp became wedged. This rendered the backstop ineffective and the 41-year-old fell unchecked some 30 meters into the depths. The man hit an icy platform and suffered serious injuries.

Nevertheless, the fallen man managed to make an emergency call. The emergency services rescued the seriously injured man from an emergency helicopter using a cable winch. The man was then flown to Innsbruck Hospital.
