4700 migrants apprehended, 38 smugglers in custody

So far this year, almost 5000 migrants have been apprehended and almost 40 smugglers have been arrested. The "Krone" knows the current refugee figures. 

For many months, the army and police were in constant operation as up to 3,500 refugees made their way across the border from Hungary into Burgenland week after week. In the fall of 2023, the series of large-scale arrivals came to an abrupt end.

More and more arrivals
The smuggling mafia changed their routes to evade increased measures by investigators. At the beginning of 2024, often fewer than 20 migrants were stranded in Germany every seven days. By the summer, however, the influx had increased somewhat. The number of registrations ranged between 90 and 150 per week - and the trend was slowly rising!

350 refugees in one week
At the end of November, 239 refugees and five arrests of people smugglers were reported within seven days. In the past week from December 2 to 8, 350 illegal immigrants were discovered, particularly in the districts of Neusiedl am See and Oberpullendorf.

"No smugglers could be caught during this period," it says. This year, a total of 4700 refugees were apprehended in Burgenland. The police put a stop to 38 smugglers.
