Salzburg must decide: Public transport or cars

A Salzburg traffic study shows that in order to expand public transport in the central area and make it more attractive, car traffic would have to be restricted. This would require more bus lanes and metering systems.

A recently published traffic study for Salzburg from 2022 shows the potential of public transport in the central area. "Some proposals are already being implemented," reports city councillor Anna Schiester (Citizens' List). It seems clear that public transport could develop significantly. Route changes, closer intervals and priority for public transport would make it much more attractive.

"Considerable restrictions"
"That would only work with considerable restrictions," says Schiester. This refers to car traffic. Buses would have to be given priority on important routes. Both with more dedicated lanes and with controllable priority at junctions. This would guarantee punctuality. It seems clear that such a plan would be difficult to implement in Salzburg. "You have to decide what you want in the city," says the city councillor.
