Flooding and massive damage due to storms

Within a very short space of time, enormous amounts of rain fell in Kukmirn in southern Burgenland on Thursday. The fire departments were deployed on a large scale and some firefighters even had to be called out later.

Dark clouds gathered over the southern Burgenland municipality on Thursday evening before the heavens opened and enormous amounts of rain poured down on Kukmirn. Within a very short time, streets and cellars were under water.

Goods roads washed away by water
Even the sports field was flooded, and some asphalt roads were simply washed away by the masses of water. At times it rained up to 65 liters per square meter. The firefighters had their hands full pumping out cellars, unblocking sewers, clearing blockages and removing mud from roads.

Numerous alerts
"Further alerts were received every second via the state security center and the established operations control center," reports a spokesperson. Due to the large number of operations, the firefighters from Eisenhüttl, Rehgraben, Gerersdorf bei Güssing, Sulz and Steingraben also had to be alerted.

Several places in Burgenland affected
A total of 80 firefighters were deployed, and employees of the road administration and citizens also helped out. In addition to Kukmirn, Strem, Güttenbach, Neusiedl bei Güssing and Limbach were also affected by the storm.
