After horror crash
Vingegaard back on the bike – hopes for the Tour
Just over a month after his serious crash at the Tour of the Basque Country, in which he broke a collarbone, several ribs and a finger and punctured his lung, Danish cyclist Jonas Vingegaard has returned to his bike and completed his first training session. However, it remains to be seen whether the defending champion will be able to compete in the Tour de France starting on June 29.
"Of course I hope to be able to start at the Tour. We don't yet know exactly what my form will be like and how my recovery will continue, but I will do everything I can to be in good shape," said the 27-year-old in a video message released by his team Visma on Tuesday. "It feels good and is getting better every day. But I still have to recover from a few things."
Situation like last year?
The situation is somewhat reminiscent of that of his great rival Tadej Pogacar last year. The Slovenian broke his navicular bone in the Liège-Bastogne-Liège classic at the end of April and was only able to train on a roller trainer for several weeks afterwards. In the final week of the Tour, Pogacar ran out of strength and Vingegaard won the race.
