Explosion on a mountain pasture: victim travels down to the valley injured

Dramatic incident at an alpine hut in the Carinthian district of Spittal an der Drau: an explosion occurred while checking the truck batteries for his photovoltaic system. The injured man made his own way down to the valley.  

The 49-year-old wanted to routinely check the acid level of two truck batteries at his alpine hut in Großkirchheim. The man was using these as a storage medium for his photovoltaic system. And so he loosened the filler plugs of the batteries. Until one of them suddenly exploded for an unknown reason!

Despite his injuries, the 49-year-old independently alerted the emergency services by cell phone and even drove his car from the mountain hut at 1,300 meters above sea level to the valley station to meet them. There he was first treated by an emergency doctor who was already waiting and then flown to hospital by a rescue helicopter.
