Abandoned train tracks as new “suburban railroads” for bikers

Where steam horses once made their way, bikes are now on the move: numerous former railroad lines have already been converted into cycle paths, particularly in the Weinviertel region. In places where the tracks have already been dismantled, the bike network is now being gradually expanded even further.

It was only in the fall that an unused route between Palterndorf-Dobersmannsdorf and Zistersdorf in the district of Gänserdorf was opened to cyclists. Thanks to shorter connections to nearby villages, as many cyclists as possible can easily reach a main traffic route - the international "Eurovelo 9".

Connection for cyclists
The concept has proved successful, and a continuation of the railroad line between Poysdorf and Dobermannsdorf is now to be converted into a connection for cyclists. The signals are green for the project to be professionally continued in the eastern Weinviertel: The municipalities of the border triangle there have already founded a working group.
