Pressure at BC Vienna
On one leg for the last chance at the play-offs
The BC Vienna basketball team needs a win against Kapfenberg on Sunday. Otherwise their last chance of making the Superliga play-offs will be gone. But even in the event of a win, the favorites still need help to avert their worst season since 2011. And from the city on the Danube, of all places.
Everything looked fine for the BC Vienna basketball team before the start of the season. With Gmunden and Klosterneuburg, the favorites - 2022 double winners, 2023 Alpe-Adria Cup finalists - were among the top teams in the Superliga according to the betting odds. Today's home clash against Kapfenberg is the last chance match for a place in the play-offs.
If they lose against the Styrians, they will lose second place in the qualifying round and thus their play-off ticket. If they win, Kapfenberg cannot win against the Timberwolves (Tuesday) and in the final round in Oberwart. BC Vienna, on the other hand, needs a win in the final derby at the Timberwolves. They therefore need help from the Danube city.
"The situation is of course extremely frustrating for us," sighs BC manager Petar Stazic. "I don't feel like talking about all the injuries anymore." The team is also going into today's clash with a lack of replacements. Stazic praised the commitment of his players: "I really can't blame anyone at our club. Not the coach and not the players either. They all gave their best, worked their butts off and sometimes almost played on one leg." Nevertheless, the worst season since tenth place in 2011 looms. Then there was the title two years later. Perhaps a good omen.
