Ex-captain becomes Streich’s successor in Freiburg

Now it's official! SC Freiburg confirmed on Friday that Julian Schuster will take over from cult coach Christian Streich. The former SC captain was once Streich's "extended arm" and will be allowed to coach his first professional team from next season.

After the Christian Streich era, SC Freiburg is relying on former professional Julian Schuster as its new head coach. The German Bundesliga club confirmed on Friday that the 38-year-old will take over from Streich next season. The long-serving coach will leave the club in the summer. As usual, the club did not provide any information on the duration of the contracts of Schuster's Austrian legionnaires Michael Gregoritsch, Philipp Liehnhart and Junior Adamu.

Streich's departure in mid-May will bring to an end a success story that has lasted more than twelve years. On Monday, the 58-year-old announced that he would be leaving the 2022 DFB Cup finalists at the end of the season to make way for "new energy".

Mixed season
Schuster was most recently employed as a liaison coach between the SC youngsters and the professionals; the former Freiburg midfielder and captain has no experience as a full-time coach. The novice coach will take over an established Bundesliga club.

After qualifying for the Europa League twice in succession in the last two seasons and reaching the round of 16 each time, Sport-Club have not been quite as successful this season. However, the Breisgauers are ninth in the table ahead of the remaining eight games under Streich.
