Mega construction project in the 9th district
Largest university campus now under construction in Vienna
The old WU is now being completely demolished for the new "Campus Althangrund" on Alsergrund. But the construction project is complex.
It will be a mega urban development project and no stone will be left unturned. The "Althangrund Campus", Austria's largest university site, will be built on the site of the old business university in the middle of the 9th district.
Planning councillor Ulli Sima, district leader Saya Ahmad (both SPÖ) and ÖBB board member Silvia Angelo gave the go-ahead for the project planning on Monday together with BIG boss Weiss and the university rectors.
It is planned that the University of Vienna, BOKU and a secondary school will move into the modern campus. A total of over one billion euros will be invested in the 58,000 square meter site. However, the construction project is complex because the tracks of the Franz-Josef train station are currently located beneath the site. In any case, the entire slab will be removed. The first demolition work is scheduled to begin in 2027. Construction will then start in 2030 at the earliest.
