Aich/Dob inflicts first league defeat on Hypo Tirol
Volleyball Cup winners SK Aich/Dob inflicted their first league defeat of the season on champions Hypo Tirol in the first game of the semi-final series in the Austrian Volley League (AVL).
The Carinthians defeated Innsbruck 3:2 (-25,17,-23,21,13) in Bleiburg in a highly dramatic match and took a 1:0 lead in the best-of-five series. Game number two will take place on March 13 in Innsbruck (7 p.m.).
The semi-final series between the two teams started in Bleiburg as an exception, as the second game was brought forward because Aich/Dob will host the MEVZA League Final 4 on March 16 and 17. And the Carinthians made the most of their home court. Although they missed two set points in the first set against the basic round winners from Tyrol, who had celebrated 18 wins in 18 matches, the hosts continued to hold their own.
They managed to equalize the sets at 1:1 and 2:2. In the deciding set, Aich/Dob overcame a 5:8 deficit and converted their first match point after more than two and a half hours. Player of the match was Bryan Camino Martinez with 24 points.
"You can't play better than that, that was volleyball at its best. My boys surprise me time and time again," beamed Aich club boss Martin Micheu at the end.
