The decision in favor of candidate Pamela Rendi-Wagner for an EU health authority comes as a surprise to political and party ayatollahs, but has a certain (short) tradition.

Domestic political observers tend to scrutinize every decision in terms of party affiliation and personal benefit. The German government nominates a former opposition leader and government critic as a candidate for the head of the EU health authority ECDC (European Center for Disease Prevention and Control) near Stockholm?

By supporting Pamela Rendi-Wagner, are the Ministers for Health Johannes Rauch and for Foreign Affairs Alexander Schallenberg, who are in charge of this issue, trying to get one over on the current SPÖ leadership around Andreas Babler? Or just to prove how impartial the government is when making important appointments?
