How Voves managed the red transition of power
"Krone" series on the Styrian state election 2024: How SPÖ lateral entrant Franz Voves wrested the state governor's seat from the ÖVP after decades.
He has always been interested in politics, says Franz Voves, light blue shirt, dark blue jacket, jeans. His father was a KPÖ works council member at Steyr-Puch, his mother a housewife. The hostility in the workers' housing estate in Graz, the malice for the "communist boy", shaped the rest of his life: "You remember that." From 1967, Voves played ice hockey as a center forward in the ATSE team, and in 1970 he was called up to the national team. Here it is again, the fight, the drive to the top, which would ultimately propel the passionate sportsman into national politics. "I was the classic career changer."
