35,000 needed help
Tafel Austria rescued 1000 tons of food
Last year, Tafel Austria provided more than 35,000 people affected by poverty in 100 social institutions - for the first time with more than 1000 tons of rescued food.
2023 was probably one of the most turbulent years in its 25-year history: This was because the rise in prices in all areas of life meant that many people who had previously just been able to make ends meet reached their limits.
In a joint effort with 257 volunteers, it was possible to save significantly more food from new sources such as agriculture despite a further decline in food donations - and despite the fact that around one million tons of food are still disposed of in Austria every year.
Almost 16 percent more food saved
1,037,814 kilograms of edible food (up 15.8 percent), including a lot of fruit and vegetables, were rescued and distributed free of charge to mother and child homes, homeless and refugee shelters, emergency shelters and women's refuges, among others.
Alexandra Gruber, Managing Director of Tafel Austria: "Never before has our help been needed so much - and never before have we had to fight so hard for our mission." 8.5 percent of people in this country cannot afford a main meal at least every other day.
