Identity theft: “No one is safe from it!”

Identity theft on the internet continues to increase in Austria. How cyber criminals steal personal data - and how potential victims can defend themselves against it.

Alexander Lanner is supposed to pay 10,000 euros for goods he never ordered. The 33-year-old Carinthian, who lives in Vienna, is one of many people who have fallen victim to cybercriminals and now has to deal with countless reminders and debt collection letters. His personal data was stolen from the internet. Unknown persons used it to go shopping online and conclude contracts with well-known Austrian cell phone stores(as reported by the "Krone" newspaper).
