Fight over woman ends with stabbing in Vienna

An argument over a woman ended in bloodshed on Saturday in Vienna's Quellenstraße in the Favoriten district. Two men attacked each other after a loud argument, one of them pulled out a knife, but subsequently suffered numerous stab wounds himself.

The two men met at around 12 noon when the husband was on his way to his apartment - and the alleged rival came out of the couple's apartment building at the same time. An argument immediately broke out between the 48-year-old Turkish man (the woman's husband) and the 27-year-old Syrian man (the alleged lover).

Words were quickly followed by deeds: Suddenly, the younger man pulled out a knife and tried to stab his counterpart. However, the 48-year-old was able to fend off the attack.

Bloody finale on the ground
The two men then fell to the ground and the 48-year-old apparently managed to get hold of the knife (although the man denied this during the subsequent interrogation). In any case, the 27-year-old suffered several stab wounds. Witnesses to the brutal scenes called the emergency services.

The seriously injured 27-year-old was given emergency medical treatment by the Vienna Professional Rescue Service and taken to hospital. The 48-year-old had minor injuries. The murder knife was seized. 

Investigations are ongoing
The investigation into the suspicion of intentionally causing grievous bodily harm to one another is ongoing, reported police spokesman Philipp Haßlinger. The Vienna public prosecutor's office ordered both suspects to be taken to a prison, he explained.

The Syrian was still in hospital on Sunday. He could not yet be questioned due to his injuries and is being guarded until he is transferred to pre-trial detention.
