Suspected espionage: drones spotted over Bavaria

Unknown drones recently flew over a military airfield in Bavaria - an incident that raises questions. Could it be espionage in connection with the war in Ukraine? Investigators are now relying on tips from the public to identify those responsible for the mysterious drone flights.

Up to ten drones of unknown origin have flown over a military airfield in Bavaria. The Bavarian investigating authorities are not ruling out an act of espionage in connection with the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine.

Police ask for information
The Bavarian State Criminal Police Office (LKA) is now asking for witnesses to help identify those responsible for the drone flights. The Munich Public Prosecutor General's Office has taken over the investigation, as it is the central office responsible for combating extremism and terrorism.

According to the LKA, the police were informed about the drone flight in Manching near Ingolstadt on Sunday evening. On site, the officers discovered up to ten drones. Despite requesting a police helicopter, the people responsible for the illegal overflights could not be identified.

Possible espionage over military installations
Drone flights over the military security areas in Manching and Neuburg an der Donau had already been reported in December, but the pilots could not be identified. It is suspected that the drones were taking pictures of the military installations.

The Bundeswehr Technical Center for Aircraft and Aviation Equipment, which tests aircraft for the German Air Force, is based in Manching. Tactical Air Force Wing 74, which monitors southern German airspace around the clock with Eurofighters, is stationed in Neuburg.
