BMW Steyr plays it safe with electric motors

It is a billion-euro project in which the first important milestones have already been reached: BMW Steyr has been running pre-series production in the new electric motor production facility since September. The company is playing it safe: plastics processor Greiner has even produced its own transport boxes for the new assembly lines.

Plant Manager Klaus von Moltke, Governor Thomas Stelzer and Mayor Markus Vogl pressed the buzzer together, opening a new chapter for BMW Steyr: On September 4, pre-series production of the electric drives began, which are set to roll off the production line from fall 2025.

"Robust on several pillars"
"Our approach is technology openness. This means that we are robustly based on several pillars," emphasizes von Moltke. Steyr continues to be the largest plant in the BMW Group for the production of diesel and petrol engines, while at the same time breaking new ground with e-drives.

A cooperation with plastics processor Greiner is helping the new start: the company, which operates from Kremsmünster, developed its own transport boxes for the new production lines in Steyr.

"Extremely high requirements"
"We have extremely high requirements for the technical cleanliness of electric motors. The boxes provide the best possible protection for the housing against corrosion, scratches and even the smallest speck of dust," says von Moltke.
