UNODC report:

85,000 women were intentionally killed in 2023

Last year, 85,000 women and girls were intentionally killed worldwide, which means that a female is killed every ten minutes. 60 percent of these crimes were committed by intimate partners or other family members.

• According to the report "Femicides in 2023", Africa recorded the highest rates of femicides by intimate partners and family members, followed by North and South America and Oceania. 
• In Europe and the Americas, most women killed in the home (64 percent and 58 percent respectively) were victims of intimate partners, while elsewhere family members were the main perpetrators.

The report underlines the urgent need for a strong criminal justice system that holds perpetrators accountable while ensuring adequate support for survivors, said Ghada Waly, Executive Director of UNODC (UN Office on Drugs and Crime).
