Man and woman crashed a quad bike into a steep forest

Two locals were injured in a serious quad bike accident in St. Anton am Arlberg in Tyrol on Thursday. They had crashed with the vehicle from a forest path into a forest and overturned several times. The driver had to be flown to hospital by helicopter.

The accident occurred at around midday on Thursday on the Gampen forest road in the municipality of St. Anton. The 57-year-old driver of the quad bike was traveling downhill with a 38-year-old woman on the passenger seat when the vehicle went over the right-hand edge of the road for unknown reasons.

Rolling over several times, the quad bike then plunged down a steep section of woodland, throwing the man and woman off the vehicle after around 20 meters. The quad bike itself came to rest after a further 15 meters on a forest path below. 

Both people were thrown from the vehicle and came to rest on the forest floor after a fall of around 20 meters with injuries of indeterminate severity.

Man rescued by rope, woman climbed back onto the path
A truck driver, who was driving behind the quad bike and observed the accident, informed the emergency services. The quad bike driver had to be rescued by the emergency helicopter using a rope and flown to Zams Hospital. The passenger apparently got off more lightly: she was able to climb back to the forest road herself, where she was picked up by the rescue team and also taken to Zams hospital. 

The St. Anton fire department took over the recovery of the vehicle.
