Van der Bellen needs an operation

Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen has to undergo an operation. According to his office, he has been struggling with disc problems for months.

"He will therefore undergo a routine operation on his intervertebral discs in the next few days," it says. For the duration of the operation and the recovery phase, Van der Bellen will be represented by Federal Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP).

Should Van der Bellen be out of action for more than three weeks, the Federal Constitution provides for the National Council Presidency to deputize for the head of state. The President of the National Council, Walter Rosenkranz (FPÖ), would then represent him externally.
