Several volunteer fire departments in Tyrol were called out to a spectacular operation on Saturday night. A Turkish truck trailer carrying around 23 tons of paper caught fire on the Inntal freeway. The work lasted until Saturday morning.

At around 2.20 a.m., the sirens were wailing in Kramsach, Brixlegg and Kundl. The reason: a truck trailer that had caught fire on the Inntal highway near Kundl. The vehicle was carrying 35 pallets of paper rolls.

The driver - a 45-year-old Turkish man - noticed smoke rising from his trailer and was able to stop the vehicle on the hard shoulder and unhitch the tractor unit. The attempt to quell the fire with two fire extinguishers failed. A short time later, the trailer was already fully engulfed in flames. The man had loaded around 23 tons of paper rolls.

The emergency services were finally able to bring the fire under control. The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation. The amount of damage cannot yet be quantified either.

The extinguishing work as well as the clearing and recovery work lasted until the early hours of the morning. As the duration of the work was not foreseeable, cars were diverted off the highway in Kramsach. Trucks had to wait for the duration of the closure and could be diverted past occasionally.

At around 7 a.m., the overtaking lane was initially opened to traffic. Shortly before 9 a.m., the second lane was also open again and the traffic jam cleared. 70 emergency crews were deployed.
