Apprenticeship with high voltage at voestalpine

As a young skilled worker, Michael is currently completing his apprenticeship with Matura. The 19-year-old has successfully completed his apprenticeship as an electrical engineer specializing in plant and operating technology at voestalpine in Linz.

Michael from Altenberg near Linz has been interested in electrical engineering since he was a boy. After finishing secondary school, he started his apprenticeship at voestalpine straight away. "I particularly liked the fact that we were already very well prepared for vocational school at the company," says Michael. "We were also able to decide for ourselveswhich department we would be assigned to."

In his job, Michael always has to keep up with the latest technology.

Michael completed his apprenticeship as a plant and operating technician and process control technician, a four-year electrical engineering apprenticeship, in June 2023. He is now "stationed" in power distribution - an area of central importance at the plant and Michael's preferred place of work. Particularly exciting: the first green electricity-powered electric arc furnace will be built in Linz by 2027, replacing a blast furnace and thus making a significant contribution to CO₂ savings.

He is currently working on completing his apprenticeship with a school-leaving certificate, after which he would like to become a master craftsman. He advises prospective apprentices to bring a willingness to learn with them: "Electrical engineering is constantly changing, you always have to keep up with the latest technology."

Around 410 young professionals are currently being trained at the state-of-the-art training center in Linz. There are around 20 apprenticeships to choose from.
