Investigation against Bolivia’s former President Morales

Bolivia's former president Evo Morales is alleged to have raped a minor during his time in office. The teenager subsequently gave birth to a girl, announced Justice Minister César Siles. The case took place eight years ago.

The raped girl is said to have been 15 or 16 years old at the time. Morales, who is now 64 years old, is registered on her daughter's birth certificate, said the Minister of Justice. The Bolivian public prosecutor Sandra Gutierrez had already issued an arrest warrant for Morales and was subsequently fired.

Sees political persecution
The former president again accused the government of wanting to attack him. "It doesn't surprise me, and it doesn't worry me either. All neoliberal governments, including the current one, have threatened and persecuted me," he wrote on the X platform.

Morales and his successor Luis Arce are currently engaged in a bitter power struggle. Morales was in office from 2006 to 2019 and was the country's first indigenous president. He was popular with his people for a long time until he tried to circumvent the constitution and seek a fourth term in 2019. Although he won the election, he resigned after fierce protests and temporarily fled the country.

In 2020, his former finance minister Arce finally became president. Both men want to run for office again in 2025.
