Far-right riots: 9 years in prison for man (27)

A man has been sentenced to nine years in prison for starting a fire outside a hotel with asylum seekers during the far-right riots in England. The 27-year-old was also filmed attacking police officers. 

The sentence is the longest ever handed down for the riots, the British news agency PA reported.

The case was undoubtedly one of the most serious he had dealt with in the wake of the attack, the judge at Sheffield Crown Court said, according to PA.

Hotel with asylum seekers attacked
A mob had attacked a hotel in Manvers, northern England, on August 4. The defendant had put wood on a fire in a dumpster that had been pushed against the exit of the building, PA reported.

In the hotel, 22 employees barricaded themselves in a panic room and feared for their lives. More than 200 asylum seekers were also housed in the building in the Rotherham area.

More than 200 convictions so far
A few weeks ago, there were right-wing extremist riots in several British cities. So far, more than 200 people have been convicted. According to PA, the courts have handed down prison sentences in most cases.

During the riots, dozens of police officers were injured, vehicles were set on fire and stores were looted. This was preceded by a knife attack in the town of Southport, in which three girls were killed and other people were injured. The lie that the perpetrator was a Muslim migrant was spread on social networks.
