Fire in former bread factory in Schwechat

On Saturday morning, a fire broke out in the former hammer bread factory in Schwechat in the district of Bruck an der Leitha (Lower Austria) - the second in just a few months. It is now clear that three teenagers started the fire.

Fire alarm on Saturday morning in Schwechat! Once again, the former bread factory caught fire. Three teenagers - two of them minors - had started the fire on the site, according to the Lower Austria Provincial Police Directorate. According to police spokesman Johann Baumschlager, the three teenagers confessed after a brief interrogation.

Several volunteer fire departments from the surrounding area fought against the flames in the early hours of the morning, and the Vienna Fire Brigade was also deployed. The fire is now said to be under control.

Second fire within a few months
A fire had already broken out on the site of the former Hammerbrotwerke in April. The directly adjacent, empty building was in flames at the time and required numerous firefighters from Lower Austria and Vienna.

However, there was also a fire on the site the previous year, in March 2023 to be precise. The experience gained from that fire helped with the one in April - and will presumably also help with the current large-scale operation.
